Effective September 29, 2026. The short version: you can read this whole site without giving us anything. Two things count visits — WordPress.com’s own statistics and Google Analytics — and the cookie banner tells you so on your first visit. We ask for an email address in two places, to send you what you asked for. We have never sold, rented or traded anyone’s information, and we run no advertising.

What runs in your browser

WordPress.com statistics. This site is hosted by WordPress.com (Automattic). Its statistics count visits and which pages were opened. Automattic’s own cookie policy covers what that sets.

Google Analytics. WordPress.com’s Google Analytics setting sends the same kind of count to Google: which pages were read, roughly where from, on what kind of device, and which search or link brought you. Google sets its _ga cookies on this site for up to two years. We read the result as totals. We do not use Google’s advertising features.

Embedded videos and posts. Where a page shows a YouTube video or a Facebook or Instagram post, that company loads it and sets its own cookies when the page is displayed. A plain link to those sites sets nothing until you follow it.

The cookie banner. It appears once, and your answer is kept in a cookie on this site for six months. The banner has one button, Accept. To refuse instead: block cookies for this site in your browser’s settings, or use Google’s opt-out add-on. The site works the same either way.

What we collect, exactly

The mailing list. “Get on the list” asks for your email address. We store it in our own subscriber list and use it for two things: The Downbeat once a month, and the week’s open mics and jams in Red Deer on Thursday mornings. Every email carries an unsubscribe link, and one press ends it.

The contact form. The contact and get-involved forms ask for your name, your email address and your message. The form is WordPress.com’s; it emails us what you wrote and keeps a copy in the site’s form responses. We use it to answer you.

The store and memberships. Payments are taken on Stripe’s own page. Your card details never reach us; Stripe tells us what was bought, by which email address, so we can deliver it. Stripe’s privacy policy covers what it holds.

What we do not collect. No password, no date of birth, no advertising identifier, and no browsing history from anywhere but this site.

Who else sees it

WordPress.com hosts the site and the contact-form responses. Google receives the analytics described above. Stripe handles payments. The mailing list sits in our own database. None of them is allowed to use your information for their own purposes, and no one else sees it.

Your rights

Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act and Canada’s PIPEDA both apply. You can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, and withdraw your consent at any time. Email reddeercommunityforjazzmusic@gmail.com and we will answer within thirty days. If we cannot resolve it, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta and the Privacy Commissioner of Canada both take complaints.

If this page changes, the new date goes at the top, and the change is not applied to information collected before it.
